About the IELTS Listening test
The IELTS Listening paper is the same for Academic and General Training candidates. It lasts about 30 minutes and contains four recorded parts that get progressively more difficult: a conversation in a social context, a monologue in a social context, a conversation in an academic context, and an academic lecture. There are 10 questions per part, 40 in total.
In the paper-based test you are given 10 extra minutes to transfer your answers; in the computer-based test you type as you go. Spelling and grammar matter — an answer is marked wrong if the word is misspelled. As a rough guide, 30 correct answers out of 40 corresponds to a Band 7.
